The kaleidoscope was once a small world of wonder.
I used to get lost in it — just watching, turning, forgetting the time.
Now, the smartphone feels the same.
Endless colors, endless movements, endless connections.
But I hope we don’t forget —
some of the most beautiful reflections still live in real eyes.
한때 만화경은 나의 작은 우주였다.
그 속을 돌리고, 바라보다 보면 시간 가는 줄 몰랐다.
요즘의 스마트폰, SNS도 어쩌면 그때의 만화경 같다.
끝없이 변하고, 반짝이지만,
가장 소중한 건 여전히 사람의 눈을 마주 보는 순간이라는 걸
잊지 않았으면 한다.

얼마 전, 만화경 이야기를 들었다.
1800년대 초, 스코틀랜드의 데이비드 브루스터라는 과학자가
우연히 만들어낸 발명품이었다고 한다.
그 단순한 관 속에서 무수한 색과 빛이 반짝이며
사람들은 그 안에서 한참을 시간을 보냈다고 한다.
하지만 곧 사람들은 서로의 얼굴 대신
만화경 속 무늬를 더 오래 바라보게 되었다.
그 작은 관 속 세상이, 현실보다 더 매혹적이었기 때문이다.
문득 생각했다.
지금 우리가 들여다보는 스마트폰은
그 시대의 만화경과 닮아 있지 않을까.
함께 있는 시간 속에서도, 우리는 각자의 화면을 들여다본다.
그 안에서 연결되었다 믿지만,
어쩌면 다시 잊혀가고 있는지도 모른다.

I recently heard the story of the kaleidoscope.
In the early 1800s, a Scottish scientist named David Brewster
accidentally invented it — a simple tube of mirrors and colored glass.
Inside it, endless patterns of light danced and changed,
and people spent hours lost in its shifting beauty.
But soon, they began looking less at each other,
and more into the kaleidoscope.
That tiny world felt more vivid than the one around them.
And I wonder —
aren’t our smartphones the kaleidoscopes of today?
Even when we’re together,
our eyes are fixed on the small screens in our hands.
We call it connection,
but perhaps, once again, we are quietly drifting apart.
